Leather Jacket Care Guide: How to Keep Your Jacket Looking New

Why Leather Care Matters

A premium leather jacket is an investment — one that, with the right care, can last decades and look better with age. At Scorpion Hide Co, every jacket is crafted from genuine leather, and we want yours to stay in perfect condition for years to come. This guide covers everything you need to know about cleaning, conditioning, storing, and protecting your leather outerwear.

1. Regular Cleaning

Dirt and oils from everyday wear can break down leather over time if left untreated. Here's how to keep it clean:

  • Wipe down after each wear with a soft, dry cloth to remove surface dust and oils.
  • For light stains, use a damp cloth with a tiny amount of mild soap. Always test on a hidden area first.
  • Never use household cleaners, alcohol-based products, or baby wipes — these strip the leather's natural oils and cause cracking.
  • For deeper cleaning, use a dedicated leather cleaner applied with a soft cloth in circular motions.

2. Conditioning: The Most Important Step

Leather is skin — it needs moisture to stay supple and crack-free. Conditioning is the single most important thing you can do to extend the life of your jacket.

  • Apply a leather conditioner every 3–6 months, or more frequently if you wear your jacket often.
  • Use a soft cloth to work the conditioner in gently, then buff off any excess.
  • Conditioning also helps restore colour and shine to jackets that have started to look dull.
  • For suede leather (like our Women's Brown Suede Leather Blazer), use a suede-specific conditioner and brush — never a standard leather conditioner.

3. Dealing with Water & Rain

Leather and water aren't enemies, but prolonged exposure can cause damage. If your jacket gets wet:

  • Shake off excess water and let it dry naturally at room temperature — never use a hairdryer or place it near a radiator.
  • Once dry, apply conditioner to restore moisture lost during drying.
  • For ongoing protection, use a leather water repellent spray at the start of each season.

4. Removing Stains

Act quickly — the sooner you treat a stain, the easier it is to remove.

  • Oil or grease stains: Blot (don't rub) with a dry cloth, then sprinkle a little cornstarch or talcum powder on the stain. Leave overnight and brush off gently.
  • Ink stains: Dab with a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol, working from the outside in. Follow with conditioner.
  • Mould or mildew: Mix equal parts water and rubbing alcohol, wipe the affected area, and allow to dry fully before conditioning.

5. Proper Storage

How you store your leather jacket matters as much as how you clean it.

  • Always hang your jacket on a wide, padded hanger — wire hangers can distort the shoulders over time.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can fade and dry out leather.
  • Use a breathable garment bag (not plastic) for long-term storage — leather needs airflow.
  • Stuff the sleeves lightly with tissue paper to help the jacket hold its shape during storage.

6. Professional Care

For significant stains, deep scratches, or colour restoration, always consult a professional leather cleaner. Attempting major repairs at home can cause irreversible damage.

Care by Jacket Type

  • Biker & Moto Jackets (e.g., our Metallic Green Biker Jacket): Pay extra attention to zips and hardware — wipe metal parts with a dry cloth and apply a little petroleum jelly to keep zips running smoothly.
  • Bomber Jackets (e.g., our Cropped Bomber Jacket): Focus conditioning on the cuffs and collar, which see the most friction.
  • Leather Coats (e.g., our Double Breasted Leather Coat): Longer coats benefit from hanging storage and full-length garment bags.
  • Shearling Jackets (e.g., our B3 Aviator Bomber): Brush the shearling lining regularly with a soft bristle brush to keep it fluffy and clean.
